‘Chale’ distrib’n marks docu first

World Brief

Bollywood’s first theatrically released documentary, “Chale Chalo — The Lunacy of Film Making,” opens today.

Docu is a 150-minute account of the making of the 2001 Oscar-nominated “Lagaan” (Tax), helmed by Satyajit Bhatkal, a production assistant on “Lagaan.”

India has a rich tradition of social and political documentaries, but “Chale” is the first to be released in mainstream theaters.

“Lagaan” revolved around a cricket match between Indian villagers and their British masters during the Raj.
