SYDNEY — In a rare display of Hollywood hoopla in China, Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck are due to attend today’s preem of the Shangying Warner Cinemas in Nanjing.
“Looney Tunes: Back in Action” is the opening attraction at the 2,200-seat eight-plex, Warner Bros.’ third theater on the mainland.
Located in Jiangsu province, the theater is 51% owned by WB, which is the first Western investor to be allowed a majority stake in a Chinese cinema. Its partner is Shanghai United Circuit.
“This theater is a major step in our efforts to bring Chinese moviegoers the finest Chinese and imported films in state-of-the-art facilities throughout the country,” said Millard Ochs, prexy of WB Intl. Cinemas.
WB already operates the Paradise Warner Cinema in Shanghai (majority owned by Shanghai Paradise) and the Warner Wanda Cinema in Tianjin. It’s partnered in the latter with mall developer Dalian Wanda Group Co., with which it plans to create 30 multiplexes in the next few years.
