Bollywood pics look to reap festive coin

Most profitiable weekend of year starts Friday

NEW DELHI — Bollywood kicks off the start of the biggest moviegoing period in India with four films of great pedigrees clashing at the box office.

“Aitraaz,” from producer Subhash Ghai, is based on a real-life rape accusation and its retraction; “Veer Zaara,” from vet producer Yash Chopra, is a family film; “Naach,” from Ram Gopal Varma, is a romancer; and “Mughal-e-azam” is a newly colorized version of a 1960 classic.

“We were inspired by the case of the South African judge who was accused of rape during the World Social Forum meeting in January,” said “Aitraaz” Abbas Burmawala, who helmed the movie with brother Mustan.

Friday is the start of the most profitable weekend of the year for Bollywood due to the Hindu festival of Diwali and the Muslim fest of Eid ul-Fitr falling within days of each other.
