Nun will oversee the National Film Institute

BUENOS AIRES — Argentinian President Nestor Kirchner on Tuesday appointed Jose Nun as culture secretary, a key post for setting policy for financing and regulating film and theater.

A political scientist and lawyer, Nun will oversee Incaa, the National Film Institute, one of the few sources of funding for local helmers, along with limited private money from domestic and foreign production outfits.

Institute implemented radical changes in film regulation this year, requiring exhibitors to show at least one homegrown pic per screen each quarter and introducing other measures to help domestic productions compete with Hollywood blockbusters.

Nun replaces Torcuato Di Tella, a sociologist who resigned early Tuesday after angering the government by saying that tackling hunger should be a greater priority than funding culture.
