Zeitgeist taps into ‘World’

Pic explores impact of globalization on local culture

NEW YORK — Indie banner Zeitgeist Films has acquired all U.S. rights from sales rep Celluloid Dreams to “The World,” the fourth feature by helmer Jia Zhang-ke.

Pic, which debuted at the recent New York Film Festival, follows a group of provincial workers employed by World Park, a bizarre cross between Las Vegas and Disney’s Epcot Center, where tourists visit international monuments without ever leaving the Beijing suburbs. The film explores the impact of urbanization and globalization on a traditional culture.

“World” was produced by Chow Keung, Shozo Ichiyama and Hengameh Panahi. Zeitgeist will roll out the film in May.

Zeitgeist’s Nancy Gerstman and Emily Russo brokered the pact with Charlotte Mickie of Celluloid Dreams.

Distrib’s credits include recent Sundance standout “The Corporation.”
