NEW YORK — Documaker Jessica Yu will transition to narrative features with indie production “The Cake Eaters,” an offbeat comic drama scripted by and starring Jayce Bartok. Pic is scheduled to shoot in New York next month for Red Sky Pictures.
Co-exec producers are Christopher L. Scott and David Schiavone, two of the founding partners of Gotham-based production shingle Red Sky, which optioned the original screenplay by actor-turned-scribe Bartok (“The Station Agent”) earlier this year.
Set in small-town America over the course of two days, the contempo tale centers on two dysfunctional families thrown together by the return of one family’s prodigal son, forcing the clans’ members to battle old ghosts and work through emotional issues as they search for love at any cost.
Yu won the 1997 Academy Award for docu short subject with “Breathing Lessons: The Life and Work of Mark O’Brien.” Her feature docs “The Living Museum” and “In the Realms of the Unreal” premiered at Sundance. Yu also has directed episodes of “The West Wing” and “ER.”
Producers are pursuing other key cast members for “The Cake Eaters.”
