What gives in Berlin? ‘Something’

Fest will hold world preem of Leconte's latest

BERLIN — Nancy Meyers’ comedy “Something’s Gotta Give” has been added to the strong lineup of U.S. movies at the Berlin Intl. Film Festival, screening out of competition in the fest’s main section.

The Berlinale will also hold the world premieres of French helmer Patrick Leconte’s “Confidences trop intimes” (Intimate Strangers), a psychological comedy featuring Anne Brochet, Sandrine Bonnaire and Fabrice Lucchini, and Italian relationship drama “Primo amore” by Matteo Garrone, starring Vitaliano Trevisan and Michela Cescon. The fest runs Feb. 5-15.

Meanwhile, Alan Parker, helmer and chairman of the U.K. Film Council, will be a tutor at the Berlinale Talent Campus along with fellow U.K. directors Stephen Frears and Mike Leigh. The filmmakers will share their expertise with up-and-coming filmmakers and host the acting workshop “Actors on Directors and Directors on Actors” at the film fest’s educational platform, which runs Feb. 7-12.

Parker has also been tapped as the keynote speaker at the Global Film Finance Berlin 2004 media conference, to be held Feb. 6, independent of the Berlinale.

The conference, organized by the German film producers’ interest group Film 20 and Berlin-based film financing consulting company Peacefulfish, will include the participation of local TV toppers Georg Kofler of paybox Premiere, Roger Schawinski of Haim Saban’s Sat 1 and Christian Seifert of KarstadtQuelle New Media, which owns sports web DSF.

Representatives from banks and financing bodies will also be on hand.
