Fox will help promote sib studio 20th Century Fox’s summer release “The Day After Tomorrow” via a 10-minute trailer set to air Wednesday, May 12.
To make room for the preview, Fox has shuffled the night’s schedule, starting with an extended edition of “That ’70s Show.” Laffer will now air on the night from 8 to 8:44 p.m. That includes the regular episode, titled “Sparks,” along with a 10-minute collection of bloopers and outtakes compiled from the show’s past two seasons.
Fox will also run an expanded version of the “American Idol” results show from 8:54 to 10 p.m.
In between, from 8:44 to 8:54 p.m., net will show scenes from “The Day After Tomorrow,” which opens May 28. Film, from “Independence Day” helmer Roland Emmerich, revolves around cataclysmic natural disasters hitting Earth in one day. Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ian Holm, Emmy Rossum and Sela Ward star.
Fox has aired specials in the past timed to promote feature film releases, but this marks the first time the net has made unusual time shifts to wedge a lengthy promo in between episodes of regularly scheduled series.
Announcement also comes as several movie studios have found new ways this spring to promote their wares on TV. Disney is pushing M. Night Shyamalan release “The Village” during airings of the director’s films “The Sixth Sense” and “Unbreakable” on ABC.
