HOLLYWOOD — Imax and 20th Century Fox have pacted to simultaneously release the animated CGI feature “Robots” in both Imax and conventional theaters March 11.
“Robots” marks the first day-and-date Imax release to open during the spring, marking a change to a year-round release strategy for the Canadian large-screen exhib.
“We will begin offering commercial films to the Imax theater network year round,” said Imax Filmed Entertainment chairman-prexy Greg Foster.
In the past, Imax pics opened only during the summer and holiday tentpole seasons.
“The spectacular CGI effects in this movie are perfect for Imax’s immersive format,” said Bruce Snyder, Fox’s domestic distrib chief. He added that additional pics will be released in the format.
Project reteams Academy Award-winning animation director Chris Wedge with Fox. His last pic, “Ice Age,” earned more than $382 million worldwide. “Robots” is voiced by Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry, Mel Brooks, Greg Kinnear, Drew Carey, Jim Broadbent, Amanda Bynes and Robin Williams.
Fox animation prexy Chris Meledandri said he will work with both his and Imax teams to complete the Imax version of the picture shortly.
