Sony is in talks with Dimension to come onboard the Robert Rodriguez family pic “The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl” as a co-financing partner.
Under terms of the deal Dimension would handle domestic distribution and Sony would take international.
Partnership is the result of the option Sony has on an upcoming Rodriguez film — an agreement that was brokered when Sony agreed to partner with Dimension on “Once Upon a Time in Mexico,” which Rodriguez wrote, directed and produced last year.
George Lopez is starring in the film, which is an empowerment tale about a 10-year-old outcast forced to spend summer vacation alone. With his two imaginary friends (the title characters), he goes on a mission to prove dreams can become reality.
Newcomers Taylor Dooley, Taylor Lautner and Cayden Boyd are also cast.
Rodriguez wrote the script and is directing the pic, which is aiming for a June release date.
Rodriguez and Elizabeth Avellan are producing through their Troublemaker Studios label.
