Producer gets Righteous

Rights optioned from Medley, manager David Cohen

Blue-eyed soul duo the Righteous Brothers will be the subject of the next musical foray for Arthur Friedman, producer of upcoming Bobby Darin biopic “Beyond the Sea.”

Friedman optioned feature rights from remaining Righteous Brother Bill Medley and the duo’s longtime manager, David B. Cohen. Bobby Hatfield, the other half of the singing team, died last November at the age of 63 before a gig in Kalamazoo, Mich.

The Righteous Brothers first performed in 1962 at an Orange County club. Two years later, Phil Spector produced “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” which remains the most-played single in radio history.

The Righteous Brothers found Hollywood success late in their career when films “Top Gun,” “Ghost” and “Dirty Dancing” featured their songs.

Friedman told Daily Variety the film also would be a character study of the low-key Medley and wild man Hatfield, who suffered from a lifelong case of stage fright. Their differences led to multiple breakups over the group’s 42 years.

Friedman will produce the project with Medley and Cohen.
