‘Moon’ shot for Gussi

Company pre-bought $3.2 mil political thriller last year

Mexico’s leading indie distrib, Gussi Films, is boarding its first Mexican co-production as part of its new bid to co-produce two to four pics a year.

Company has committed to the next pic by Jorge Ramirez, helmer of U.K.-Mexican political thriller “Rabbit on the Moon” (Conejo en la Luna) which Gussi released in Mexico to critical acclaim last month.

Pic screened at the AFI fest and AFM.

Gussi pre-bought the $3.2 million political thriller last year, a rare move on its part. It has only bought a handful of Mexican pics, including this year’s AFI Grand Jury International Feature prizewinner “Duck Season” and political satire “La Ley de Herodes.”

Ramirez’s still untitled project is set in Mexico City where five families proceed to wreck their apartments while searching for a rumored buried treasure in the building. Ramirez is writing the screenplay. Gussi is expected to put up most of the $2 million budget. Ramirez’s Beanca Films will cover the rest.

“We hope to start shooting the film by the middle of next year,” said Gussi acquisitions chief, Alejandro Lebrija.
