NEW YORK — Miramax Films vet Matt Brodlie will join Sony unit TriStar Pictures to serve as senior veep, production and acquisitions, reporting to division topper Valerie Van Galder.
Based in Los Angeles, Brodlie will be responsible for all TriStar acquisitions and productions.
In the new role, Brodlie also reports to Sony Motion Picture Group exec veep of worldwide marketing and distribution Paul Smith, and he will be involved in acquiring foreign-language films for theatrical distribution in various overseas territories.
Smith says Brodlie will help Sony’s push to “expand our local language activities to countries like Italy and Germany, where we do not have a local language office.”
At Miramax for 10 years, Brodlie was involved with such films as “Hero,” “In the Bedroom,” “The Quiet American,” “The Barbarian Invasions” and “Fahrenheit 9/11.”
He was most recently senior veep of acquisitions at Miramax, where he oversaw the mini-major’s Los Angeles, Sydney and Beijing acquisitions staffs.
The slumbering TriStar was jump-started this year as the marketing and acquisitions unit of Sony. The move has given Sony an array of specialized film labels: TriStar, Screen Gems, Sony Pictures Classics plus the newly acquired MGM and United Artists brands.
While Screen Gems has become a lower-budget genre label, and SPC is a respected distributor of arthouse pics, the bolstered TriStar is aiming to bring films to targeted auds with a lean and efficient biz model.
Upcoming releases for the brand include Catherine Hardwicke’s ’70s skateboarding pic “Lords of Dogtown” and Roman Polanski’s “Oliver Twist.”
