Shingle to turn drama into laffer

Jason Lust’s Circle of Confusion has optioned rights to journo Ken Baker’s memoir “Man Made.” Gary Rosen will pen the script as a comedy.

Tome tells of the battle that Baker, now the West Coast executive editor for Us Weekly, fought against a rare kind of brain tumor, which flooded his body with female hormones, causing sexual dysfunction until he was cured by surgery at age 27.

When the book was published in 2001, Baker received wide attention, appearing on “Dateline,” “The Howard Stern Show,” and “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” Interest from producers followed, but Baker said he was uncomfortable seeing his story told as a sentimental medical drama.

Lust and Rosen impressed him with their pitch to revise his story into a comedy about a man who goes through puberty at 27.

“The book is not a comedy,” Baker said, “but they were able to see the awkwardness of my medical condition as an entry point for comedy.”

Rosen is writing, and is attached to direct, “The Prank” for producers Neal Moritz, Glen Morgan and James Wong.

Circle of Confusion, which has a first-look deal with Columbia Pictures, is developing, among other projects, “A House Called Awful End” at Warner Bros., comic book adaptation “The Psycho” at Universal, and “Hammer of the Gods” for New Regency.

Baker is repped by ICM; Rosen is repped by the Gersh Agency.
