Majors invade Asia Media Festival

Event sees 30% rise in attendance since last year

SINGAPORE — Major players, including Sony Pictures, CBS/Paramount Intl. Television and Buena Vista Intl. Television, made their first foray to the Asia Media Festival, which opened Wednesday at the Shangri-La Hotel Singapore.

Event is dominated by the Asia TV Forum (ATF) but also comprises the Asia Film Market & Conference and Asia Animation. Organizers are claiming a 30% rise in attendance on last year. This figure includes 10,000 participants in trade and public events, with 400 companies from 38 countries represented.

“We recognize that ATF is a market that has continued to grow from strength to strength in regional and international standing,” said a BVIT spokesman.

BVIT-Asia Pacific used the three-day event to announce a renewal of its multiyear features agreement with News Corp.’s Star Group. Deal includes pics from Walt Disney, Touchstone and Miramax such as “Princess Diaries 2,” “Starsky & Hutch” and “Cold Mountain.” Pics will continue to air on pan-Asian Hollywood movies channel Star Movies.

Singapore’s Media Development Authority announced a partnership with National Geographic Channels Intl. to foster development of high-definition documentaries. Singapore filmmakers will produce three hours of programming for the international market.
