Lumina shines on Meirelles pic

TV series created by 'God' crew

Lumina Films will be selling a full-length feature derived from the Brazilian TV series “City of Men.” Pic is set for a late 2005 start, and the shingle will also handle sales on the series’ third season of five new episodes.

TV series was created by Fernando Meirelles, Cesar Charlone and Katia Lund and writer Paulo Lins, the team that made “City of God,” which garnered four noms at this year’s Academy Awards. “Men” follows the escapades of teenagers Laranjinha (Douglas Silva) and Acerola (Darlan Cunha) in the slums of Rio.

Meirelles’ 02 Filmes is producing the pic and Rede Globo, Andrea Barata Ribeiro and Bel Berlinck will take production credits. Project is part of the upcoming slate at Buena Onda, the production and acquisition label headed by Donald K. Ranvaud. Buena Onda is Lumina’s sister company.

Lumina hopes to launch pre-sales on the feature at Cannes. It’s not yet confirmed who will direct.

“We are very proud that 02 and Globo have entrusted us with this unique project,” said Marina Fuentes, production and acquisitions manager at Lumina Films. “It not only has a startling poignancy, it is also charming, funny and colorful with a remarkable energy and astonishing central performances from the two young actors.”
