‘Ladies’ leads for Televisa

Last year's highest-grossing local pic in Mexico

Televisa Cine, the upstart U.S. distrib of Mexico’s Televisa, is poised to release Gabriela Tagliavini’s “Ladies’ Night” in March.

Pic highlights a string of upcoming Spanish-language releases from Televisa Cine that kicks off with Fernando Sarinana’s romantic drama “Amar te duele” on 30 prints in late January, Televisa Cine chief Eckehardt von Damm said.

Also included are other Televisa Cine co-productions led by Alejandro Gamboa’s “La Ultima Noche,” a sequel to his hit “La Primera Noche”; Beto Gomez’s drama “Punos Rosas”; Alejandro Lozano’s comedy “Matando Cabos”; and four-part drama “Cero y van Cuatro,” directed by Mexican helmers Carlos Carrera, Antonio Serrano, Gamboa and Sarinana.

“Ladies’ Night” opened the Los Angeles Latino Film Festival in July and ranked as the highest-grossing local pic in Mexico last year despite a December release by Columbia TriStar/Buena Vista Intl.

Romantic comedy stars Ana Claudia Talancon (“The Crime of Father Amaro”) as a woman who falls in love with a stripper at her bachelorette party. Pic is the first Mexican production of Disney Latino label Miravista.

Televisa Cine plans a full media campaign for “Ladies,” including billboards and television ads.

“It has always been our mandate to approach these releases like any other major film company,” Mike Doban, Televisa Cine’s L.A.-based general sales manager, told Daily Variety. Platform release for the Spanish-lingo laffer will start at more than 100 prints.

Televisa Cine’s first theatrical release since its official launch in March, Sergio Arau’s satire “A Day Without a Mexican,” has grossed $3.2 million since its May 14 release on some 74 screens in California and Texas.
