MONTREAL — Seasoned Greek filmmaker Theo Angelopoulos will be jury prexy at next year’s Montreal Film Festival.
Angelopoulos’ pics include this year’s “The Weeping Meadow”; “Eternity and a Day” (1998); and “Ulysses’ Gaze,” which won the jury grand prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1995.
Announcement comes just days before the Dec. 15 decision on which group will receive cash from public film-funding agency Telefilm Canada and Quebec agency Sodec to start up a rival Montreal fest.
Four groups have applied for the government coin: the Just for Laughs comedy festival; the Fantasia Film Festival; L’Equipe Spectra, together with a group of Quebec film industry professionals; and the Festival of Nouveau Cinema.
Fest prexy Serge Losique told Daily Variety that he intends to push ahead with the 2005 fest despite funding uncertainties. The Montreal Film Festival is set to unspool Aug. 26-Sept. 5.
