It’s ‘Ladies’ Night’ at Latino film festival

Event to showcase over 100 films including 'Punto,' 'Tuna'

The eighth Los Angeles Latino Intl. Film Festival opens July 16 with Gabriella Tagliavini’s romantic comedy “Ladies’ Night,” the Mexican blockbuster produced by Disney Latino label Miravista.

Event marks the U.S. premiere of Miravista’s first production, the highest-grossing pic in Mexico last year. Fest, over which actor Edward James Olmos presides, runs through July 25 at its traditional base, Hollywood’s Egyptian Theater.

The festival will showcase more than 100 films from Portugal, Uruguay, Spain, Mexico, Cuba, Peru, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, the U.S., Chile, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Canada and Venezuela, among others.

Pics in competition include “Punto y raya” (Venezuela), by Elia Schneider; “Tuna and chocolate” (Spain), Pablo Carbonell; “O Fascinio” (Portugal), Jose Fonseca e Costa; “Dirt” (U.S.), Nancy Savoca; and “Bar el Chino” (Argentina), Daniel Burak.

Docs in competition include “Digna, worthy to the last breath” (Mexico), by Felipe Cazals; “Memory of the Loitering” (Argentina), Fernando Solanas; “Baghdad Rap” (Spain), Arturo Cisneros; and “Extranjeras” (Spain), Helena Taberna.

Thirty-five pics will vie for the short film award. Winning short will be entered to compete in the short film category at the next Oscars.

The Panorama sidebar highlights a varied selection of titles: “B-Happy,” (Chile), by Gonzalo Justiniano; “Aunque estes lejos” (Cuba), Juan Carlos Tabio; “The Storytellers” (Brazil), Eliane Caffe; “Ojos que no ven” (Peru), Francisco Lombardi; and “…En fin, el mar” (Argentina/Cuba), Jorge Dyszel.
