IBM drawn to India toon biz

Big Blue sees country as world's fastest growing market

CALCUTTA — IBM has its eye on entering the entertainment industry in India, focusing on providing high-end computers for the country’s burgeoning animation industry.

“We see India as the largest and fastest growing market … much faster now than even Hong Kong and Singapore,” said Quentin Staes-Polet, the Asia-Pacific head of IBM Digital Media Solutions. “India is increasingly seeing media consumption in a networked environment which is moving away from analog to digital systems. This is where we can play a role.”

Staes-Polet said IBM has pacted with Crest Communications, a company involved in 3D animation projects largely for the U.S. and overseas territories.

“We have developed a financing model which operates like a leasing agreement,” Staes-Polet said. “The animator pays for the equipment in installments.”
