‘Grief’ good for U, Platt

Studio, producer pick up rights to just-released novel

In a mid six-figure deal, Universal and producer Marc Platt made a preemptive acquisition of “Good Grief,” the Lolly Winston novel that was just published by Warner Books.

The book tells the story of a 36-year-old woman who tries to put her life back together after her husband dies of cancer. The author lightens a sad story with humor, and the widow begins to heal herself when she discovers a gift for baking and opens a shop.

Marc Platt Prods. prexy Abby Wolf-Weiss and exec Jared Leboff jumped on the book after reading a review last week. By Friday they were negotiating with Joel Gotler and wrapped a deal before a positive review ran in Wednesday’s New York Times.

Platt has proved adept at translating female-driven stories, from “Legally Blonde” to the Broadway hit “Wicked” to “Nappily Ever After,” the latter a starring vehicle for Halle Berry. Platt starts production next week on “The Perfect Man” with Hilary Duff starring.
