MADRID — Spanish production company Filmanova has inked a deal with Lars Von Trier’s Zentropa Entertainments to co-produce two pics.
First project will be the romantic comedy “Hotel Tivoli,” to be helmed by Filmanova prexy Anton Reixa, who debuted in 2003 with Spanish Civil War drama “The Carpenter’s Pencil.”
Second pic, details of which were not released, will be a Danish project.
Zentropa’s international sales arm Trust Films will handle international sales on “Hotel Tivoli.”
Filmanova will put up 60% of “Hotel’s” equity and Zentropa 10%. The remainder will be contributed by Argentina’s Aquafilms (20%) and Portugal’s Animatografo (10%), Filmanova exec Cani Martinez told Daily Variety.
Cast will be announced shortly and could include Danish, Spanish and Argentinian actors while the pic may include English, Spanish and Portuguese dialogue.
The $3.4 million “Hotel” follows a cigarette lighter, which is stolen in Lisbon’s Hotel Tivoli and changes hands throughout the film. The people who own the lighter all experience passionate love affairs.
Pic marks the first Spanish co-production of Zentropa, which has produced more than 50 films, including Von Trier’s “Dancer in the Dark,” “Breaking the Waves” and “Dogville.”
Pic will shoot during the first half of next year in the northern Spanish region of Galicia, Portugal, Argentina, Copenhagen and Greenland.
