Dutch kudos for Verhoeven

Three-person jury awards helmer country's largest prize

AMSTERDAM — Helmer Paul Verhoeven has won the Dutch Film Fund’s fourth Bert Haanstra Oeuvre Prize — at E45,000 ($57,240), Holland’s biggest cash prize for film.

A jury — former vice premiere Hans van Mierlo, actress Monique van de Ven and producer Haig Balian — called Verhoeven’s 24 films an impressive body of work.

Verhoeven was also cited as an example of the kind of talent that could come out of the Dutch film industry, adding the filmer set an example for the younger generation both in Holland and in Hollywood.

Pics include “Soldier of Orange” (1977), “RoboCop” (1987) and “Basic Instinct” (1992). Verhoeven’s planning a Dutch-language thriller “Blackbook” for release in 2005.

Haanstra, Holland’s most important documentary filmmaker who died in 1997, was the first winner of the award, handed down every three years, with filmer Fons Rademaker and the former Johan van der Keuken following in his footsteps.Van der Keuken died in 2001.

Verhoeven will receive the honor March 30.
