Democracy series back at Berlinale

Sections to examine America's post-war influence

Started at this year’s edition as Selling Democracy — Welcome Mr. Marshall, the series is about so-called reorientation films from the U.S.’ recovery program for Europe after World War II.

The second section, at the 55th Berlinale, Feb. 10-20, will include features from that period and lectures by international historians and film experts.

“The political and humanitarian idea of these Marshall Plan films and their contribution to the democratization process constitute one of the most impressive political initiatives of the postwar years,” festival director Dieter Kosslick said.

The final part of the series, at the Berlinale 2006, will be titled Friendly Persuasion, focusing on how Europe changed as a result of its emulation of the American way of life.
