‘Cold’ to open Berlin Festival

Miramax Oscar contender follows 'Chicago's path

The 54th Berlin Intl. Film Festival will open on Feb. 5 with Anthony Minghella’s “Cold Mountain.”

Move marks the second year in a row that Miramax will place its major Academy Award contender in the opening night slot at the Berlinale.

“Chicago” opened last year’s fest, as part of Miramax’s successful Oscar push for the pic. A full contigent of “Chicago” talent (including Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere and helmer Rob Marshall) walked the red carpet.

Because of the compressed Oscar voting schedule, Berlin’s Feb. 5 opening comes one day after final Oscar ballots are mailed.

Miramax declined comment.
