PARIS — Coming fashionably late to the Cannes party, Hong Kong actioner “Breaking News” from helmer Johnnie To has been added to the official selection of the Cannes Films Festival.
Pic, which will screen out of competition on Friday, May 21, was invited several weeks ago, but due to political demands asked the organizers to hold off on the announcement, the fest said.
At the time, “Breaking News”, a Hong Kong-China co-production, had yet to receive clearance from the Chinese censorship authorities — a necessary hurdle for local theatrical release.
Pic, produced and helmed by To, tells the tale of a female police officer who brings a TV crew into a show-down with perps in hopes of boosting the force’s image only to find the police on the losing end of the stick.
To has produced and directed over 34 movies, the most recent of which “Running On Karma”, won the best picture award at the 2003 Hong Kong Film Awards.
