Brit pix tour Israel

Moveable fest opens with 'The Mother'

TEL AVIV — Israel’s annual British Film Festival opened Thursday night with Robert Michell’s inter-generational romance “The Mother.”

The British Council initiative will screen 30 Brit pics, including “Girl With a Pearl Earring” and “Young Adam,” over 10 days in the cinematheques of Haifa, Jerusalem, Nazareth, Rosh Pina, Sderot and Tel Aviv.

Israel cable channel Jasmine TV is also broadcasting a season of Brit fare on its movie channels.

Guests include Stephen Fry, who will introduce “Bright Young Things” in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, and U.K. Film Council CEO John Woodward, over for a seminar on co-prod ops. A team from the Script Factory will also hold a seminar.

Other highlights include a Jerusalem screening of the BBC’s controversial doc “Israel’s Secret Weapon,” followed by a debate on BBC coverage of Israel, and a Michael Caine retrospective.

Caine, who attended a Jewish school in London’s East End as a child, has recorded a special trailer in Hebrew for the event.
