UA drawn to ‘Rwanda’

George's film first for new prez Rosett

Marking his first announcement since stepping in to head the division, United Artists exec VP Danny Rosett said production will start this month in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Terry George’s political drama “Hotel Rwanda,” which stars Don Cheadle, Nick Nolte and Sophie Okonedo.

Produced by A. Kitman Ho from a script by director George and Keir Pearson, the film chronicles the true story of Paul Rusesabagina (Cheadle), a brave hotel manager who risked his life and those of his family to take in more than 1,000 refugees during the 1994 genocide of the Tutsis by Hutu militia.

“We are extremely proud to support Terry George in bringing this incredible story to audiences around the world,” Rosett said. “It is a very emotional and gripping tale that offers us all an important message about individual responsibility in the face of human tragedy.”

UA will release the film in North America with Lions Gate handling international distribution.

Rosett effectively took the reins of the MGM-owned specialty unit following the removal earlier this month of Bingham Ray as president. Before that, L.A.-based Rosett was exec VP of marketing and distribution for the banner.
