Fox 2000 Pictures has hired writer-director David Frankel to adapt and helm fashionista comedy “The Devil Wears Prada,” which the studio hopes to put before cameras by spring of next year.
Based on Lauren Weisberger’s bestselling debut novel, pic is being produced by Wendy Finerman. Story concerns a small-town girl who takes a job in New York working for the imperious editor of a fashion magazine. (Weisberger is understood to have based the novel on experiences culled working under Vogue editor Anna Wintour.)
Frankel recently helmed HBO’s Hollywood send-up “Entourage” and directed episodes of the pay cabler’s Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks-produced mini “Band of Brothers.”
On the feature side, he scripted and helmed the 1995 Sarah Jessica Parker starrer “Miami Rhapsody.”
“Devil” has been in development at Fox 2000 since January 2003, when the studio attached “Pieces of April” helmer Peter Hedges, who ankled the project several months ago. Fox 2000 production prexy Elizabeth Gabler and exec VP production Carla Hacken are supervising for the studio.
