‘Potter’ performs box office magic

After a slow start to 2004, U.K. cinema admissions have surged in the second quarter to reach the halfway mark nearly 6% ahead of last year.

“Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azbakan” was responsible for a spectacular June at the box office, with ticket sales up 57% over the same month in 2003. It was the highest June on record since 1969.

The second quarter of 2004 was up 19%, according to figures from the Cinema Advertising Assn., with strong showings by pics such as “The Day After Tomorrow” and “Troy.”
