‘Christ’ tix top in Argentina

Pic surpasses previous record holder 'Two Towers'

BUENOS AIRES — “The Passion of the Christ” raced ahead at the box office over Easter in Argentina, making it the hottest draw ever for the first 18 days of release, with 1.685 million admissions.

It surpassed previous record holder “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers,” with 1.676 million admissions, and other blockbusters like “Spider-Man” and “Ice Age,” according to distributor 20th Century Fox Argentina.

Catholic Church leaders, many of whom saw a pre-screening, encouraged Argentine Catholics — who make up 85% of the 36 million population — to see the film.

Fox boosted the number of prints to 132 from 80 ahead of the March 25 release.
