Chile’s box office high on lowlife pic

Local film opens third riding media coverage

HOLLYWOOD — Chile is reeling from an unflattering portrait of its seamier side in “Mala Leche.”

Directed by newcomer Leon Errazuriz, gritty urban pic opened Thursday on 32 screens, a high count for a Chilean film.

Film, which grabbed blanket media coverage and rave reviews, focuses a harsh light on the drug problems of Chile’s youth through the story of two men who are doing their first drug deal.

Released by Andes Films, subdistributor for Columbia TriStar and BVI, “Mala Leche” took third at the box office, after “The Passion of the Christ,” which has been out on 36 screens since March 19, and “Scooby-Doo 2” on 22 screens.

“Delinquency is on the rise in Chile, and my film shows the reality of this problem,” Errazuriz said.

Andes Films reports admissions of 11,092 and a gross box office of $46,000 for the pic’s opening weekend.
