Campion thriller gets biggest ‘Cut’ in Italy

B.O. outperforms all other territories

ROME — After a blah run worldwide, Jane Campion’s “In the Cut” is wowing Italy, where the steamy Meg Ryan thriller has grossed $5.2 million four weeks after its release, its best worldwide take to date.

“It’s not every day that we can boast getting the highest gross in the world on a pic featuring a star of Meg Ryan’s caliber,” said Ernesto di Sarro, topper of Italian indie Nexo.

After preeming in Toronto last fall, Campion’s first foray into U.S.-set filmmaking pulled in a paltry $4.7 million in the U.S., where it was released by Sony.

“In the Cut” also lacked edge in international territories, making a measly $1.8 million in the U.K., $1.2 million in Campion’s native Australia and $2 million in France, where it is still in theaters.

Nexo released the pic in Italy at Christmas with a hefty $1.5 million investment in prints and advertising. Despite lukewarm reviews, auds have responded positively. After four weeks, the sexy suspenser is seventh on Italy’s box office roster, having opened at No. 6.

Last weekend it pulled in $524,000, behind “Mona Lisa Smile” but ahead of “The Human Stain,” with a respectable $3,180 per-screen average.

“I think U.S. audiences just weren’t willing to see Meg Ryan in a role that goes against the grain of her clean-cut screen persona,” Di Sarro said.

“But more importantly, our success with this title proves that Italy can be a key territory in terms of audience and that an indie with a lot riding on a single title can work harder and deliver that audience.”
