‘Osama’s’ Globes win knits Afghans

Pic source of pride for country

NEW DELHI — Afghanistan puffed up its chest Monday when “Osama,” the first Afghan film to be made after the fall of the Taliban, won the foreign film award at the Golden Globes in Los Angeles on Sunday.

“We are not only happy but also this is a source of pride for us,” said Information and Culture Minister Sayed Mahkdoom Raheen.

“We gave ‘Osama’ and its director (Siddiq Barmak) an award, the Kamalludin Behzad award,” he said in reference to a national prize. “We appreciate this work.”

“Osama,” about a young girl’s struggle to survive under the rule of the Islamic fundamentalist Taliban, has been widely acclaimed after its reception at Cannes last year.

The film has had short runs in Kabul cinemas.
