Board of governors selects March 5 as new date

Oscar is moving back to March in 2006 to make way for the Winter Olympics.

The board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has selected March 5 — a week later in the calendar than in 2004 and 2005 — for the 78th annual Academy Awards.

According to Acad prexy Frank Pierson, the step back is a one-year expedient to avoid a conflict with the Winter Games’ Closing Ceremony, which are skedded for Feb. 26.

Pierson emphasized that the Academy is pleased with what had originally been characterized as a two-year experiment in moving the kudocast almost a month earlier than in the past. The late-February broadcasts will resume in 2007.
