People choose Friels, 'Old Man,' 'Love's Brother' for awards

SYDNEY — “Somersault” continued to dominate Australia’s film awards as the drama collared seven trophies Wednesday night at the “people’s choice” IF awards.

Saga of a teenage girl who confuses sex with love took the honors for best feature, director Cate Shortland, lead actress Abbie Cornish and for script, music, cinematography.

Organized by film mag IF, awards were voted on by 42,000 people and presented at Luna Park; show was telecast on pubcaster SBS.

Colin Friels was named best actor for his perf in “Tom White.” Other honorees included “The Old Man Who Read Love Stories” (editing), “Love’s Brother” (production design) and “One Perfect Day” (sound).

Academy Award-winning short “Harvie Crumpet” received best animation kudos.

The Independent Spirit award went to Faramarz K. Rahber and Axel Grigor for their docu “Fahimeh’s Story,” which tells of a 47-year-old Iranian woman who flees to Australia with her children, and falls in love with a 77-year-old man.

Rising talent award was given to Garth Davis, director of the short “Alice” and an innovative Tooheys beer commercial.

“Strange Bedfellows,” a comedy starring Paul Hogan, collected the B.O. achievement gong.

John Clarke, the recently retired director of the National Institute of Dramatic Art, which trained many noted thesps, won the living legend award.
