European Film kudos get an ‘Education’

Almodovar, Amenabar, Akin vie for Euro prize

LONDON — Pedro Almodovar’s “Bad Education,” Alejandro Amenabar’s “The Sea Inside” and Fatih Akin’s “Head-On” are leading the running for the 2004 European Film Awards with five nominations apiece.

Those three pics are vying for best film, along with Christophe Barratier’s “The Chorus,” Lukas Moodysson’s “A Hole In My Heart” and Mike Leigh’s “Vera Drake.”

Almodovar, Amenabar and Akin are also pitched against each other for best director. The other nominees include Theo Angelopoulos for “Trilogy — The Weeping Meadow,” Nimrod Antal for “Kontroll” and Agnes Jaoui for “Look At Me.”

Penelope Cruz (“Don’t Move”) and Imelda Staunton (“Vera Drake”) are contesting the best actress prize with Sarah Adler (“Notre Musique”), Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi (“5×2”), Sibel Kekilli (“Head-On”) and Asi Levi (“Avanim2).

In the best actor section, Javier Bardem (“The Sea Inside”), Daniel Bruehl (“The Edukators”) and Bruno Ganz (“Downfall”) are lined up against Gerard Jugnot (“The Chorus”), Bogdan Stupka (“Our Own”) and Birol Uenel (“Head-On”).

The winners will be announced Dec. 11 in Barcelona.
