DGA noms quintet for ad kudos

Pytka's 14th nod tops record

The Directors Guild of America has tapped feature filmmaker David Fincher, documentarian Errol Morris and 14-time nominee Joe Pytka as finalists for its top commercial award.

Also named as nominees for the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Commercials award were Noam Murro and Lance Acord. It was Murro’s second nom following one last year; Acord is a rookie nominee.

Pytka’s nom breaks the record he shared with Leslie Dektor, who was nommed for the 13th time last year.

Winner will be announced Feb. 7 at the DGA’s 56th Annual Awards gala at the Century Plaza.

“It takes a masterful filmmaker to tell a compelling story in under 60 seconds,” said DGA president Michael Apted. “These five directors are masters indeed, using their experience, talent and imagination to provide us with some of the most innovative storytelling out there today. I extend my congratulations to them all.”

Acord was named for “Wake Up Call” for Adidas, “Cross Country Spirit” for Nike and “Part Car, Part Religion” for Mitsubishi.

First-time nominee Fincher was named for “Gamebreakers” for Nikegridiron.com, “Speed Chain” for Nike and “Beauty for Sale” for Xelibri Phones.

Morris was cited for “Pager” for Miller, “Alternative Fuel” for Miller, “Bernard” for Nike, “Kathryn” for Nike and “Meanwhile” for Cisco. He was nommed in 1999 in the documentary category for “Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred Leuchter Jr.”

Murro was tapped for “Birthday” for Got Milk?, “Beautiful” for Saturn and “Mr. Way Too Much Cologne Wearer” for Bud Light.

Pytka was selected for “23 Vs. 39” for Gatorade, “Prodigy” for IBM and “Shakespeare” for Nextel. Pytka won the trophy in 1982, 1988 and 1991.
