HOLLYWOOD — “Innocent Voices” scribe Oscar Torres attempted to dry a few eyes after Saturday’s U.S. preem of the pic based on his childhood in war-torn El Salvador.
“I know the Lakers are playing tonight,” he told the ArcLight aud during the post-unspooling Q&A. “Thank you for coming.”
Project reps a change of pace for both Lawrence Bender, who co-produced the Lions Gate pic with Altavista Films, and helmer Luis Mandoki, who returned to filmmaking in his native country after several Hollywood movies.
“A couple years ago, I made the inner choice to go into the movie business in Mexico, to do something close to my heart,” Mandoki said after the screening. “The following day, I got an offer to do an AT&T commercial.”
After shooting on the commercial wrapped, Torres, one of the actors, asked Mandoki to read his script, which he penned nearly 20 years after fleeing El Salvador.
