Art Guild taps studio fare

Major pix top art director noms

The Art Directors Guild has opted for mostly major studio fare in selecting candidates for its Excellence in Production Design Awards.

In its period or fantasy category, the guild tapped Ben Van Os for Lions Gate’s “Girl With a Pearl Earring”; Lilly Kilvert, Warner’s “The Last Samurai”; Grant Major, New Line’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”; Brian Morris, Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl”; and Jeannine Oppewall, U’s “Seabiscuit.”

Contemporary feature noms went to David Wasco and Yohei Taneda for Miramax’s “Kill Bill Vol. I”; K.K. Barrett and Anne Ross, Focus’ “Lost in Translation”; Henry Bumstead, Warner’s “Mystic River”; Jon Hutman, Sony’s “Something’s Gotta Give”; and Stephen McCabe, Disney’s “Under the Tuscan Sun.”

For single camera TV series, nominees were Joseph Hodges for “24,” Scott Chambliss for “Alias,” Bernt Capra for “Carnivale,” Richard Berg for “CSI” and Peter Politanoff for “Las Vegas.”

For multi-camera TV series: Dawn Snyder for “Arrested Development: In God We Trust,” Thomas E. Azzari for “Coupling,” Scott Heineman for “King of Queens,” Robert Strohmaier for “Life With Bonnie” and Glenda Rovello for “Will & Grace.”

TV movie or miniseries: Stuart Wurtzel for “Angels in America”; James F. Allen and Miljen Kljakovic, “Helen of Troy,” Marek Dobrowolski, “Hitler: The Rise of Evil”; Richard Cunin, “Napoleon”; and Barbara Dunphy, “The Reagans.”

Variety or awards show, music special, or documentary: Rene Lagler for “37th Annual Country Music Awards,” Bob Keen for “45th Annual Grammy Awards,” Roy Christopher for “75th Annual Academy Awards,” Mark L. Walters for “Dinosaur Planet” and John R. Mott for “Moments in Time: Valley Forge — The Crucible.”

Deadline for final voting by the 1,000-member ADG is Feb. 11. Winners will be announced at the Guild’s awards gala Feb. 14 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
