Acad drawn to staffer’s design

Poster artist is Academy's own

Turns out that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Oscar commemorative poster for the 77th Academy Awards, unveiled Tuesday, was picked right out of the org’s own back yard.

A design by Brett Davidson, a member of the Acad’s staff for 10 years, has been chosen as the 77th poster.

His work, which was in a competish with a bevy of established artists, was chosen through a blind selection process by Academy executives and members of its Board of Governors.

“We looked at dozens of designs but there was something about Brett’s image that we all were drawn to; it was a unanimous decision,” said Academy executive director Bruce Davis. “It was only after we had made the decision that we found out the designer was one of our own staff.”

“Graphic design has always been my passion, so it’s unbelievably gratifying that my work will be used to promote such a prestigious event,” added Davidson, who serves as the org’s information systems support specialist.

Davidson studied both film and graphic design at the U. of Miami. After moving to Los Angeles in 1994, he continued his design studies at USC while taking a job at the Academy.

Beginning this week, 50,000 Oscar posters will be distributed nationwide. Poster will also be available for purchase until March 14 at http://www.oscars.org/publications.

The Academy Awards are skedded for Feb. 27 at the Kodak Theater.
