‘Seabiscuit’ gallops into DVD record book

Pic becomes bestselling live-action drama

“Seabiscuit” has raced to another milestone, this time on DVD.

The homevideo version of the multiple Golden Globe, DGA and Producers Guild nominee has sold 6.5 million copies and generated $135 million in consumer spending in its first four weeks of release, $15 million more than the box office gross, according to Universal Studios Home Video.

“Seabiscuit” thus has become the bestselling live-action drama on DVD. “Titanic” and others were released when the DVD market was much smaller and skewed initially to fans of action films and comedies.

“It’s an amazing achievement for a dramatic title, and we are thrilled at how well it continues to register with audiences,” USHV president Craig Kornblau said.

“With 17 million new DVD households last year including many ‘late adopters’ comprised of the broader demographic audiences that embraced the film, it was the ideal time to release ‘Seabiscuit,’ ” Kornblau added.
