Long-awaited PC game sequel “Doom 3” will hit retail shelves Aug. 3.
Game is third installment in the best-selling “Doom” series, known for its intense action and realistic violence. Game takes place in a futuristic base on Mars, where secret experiments have opened a portal to the underworld. Players will take the role of a heavily armed “space marine” bent on defeating the demonic menace.
The “Doom” franchise has been a cash cow for developer id Software, grossing over $100 million. Movie rights were recently picked up by Universal after not making it out of development at Warner Bros.
Industryites are banking on “Doom 3,” as well as Vivendi Universal Games’ upcoming shooter “Half-Life 2,” to help revive the sluggish computer gaming market, which has not seen a hit since 2000’s “The Sims.”
Industry has suffered from rampant piracy and inflating development costs, as well as publishers’ increasing focus on the more profitable console market.
