Koch Lorber applies ‘Lipstick’ in U.S.

Tribeca pic is distrib's second theatrical release

NEW YORK — Gotham-based specialty DVD distrib Koch Lorber Films has acquired North American theatrical, DVD and free TV rights to feature documentary “Lipstick & Dynamite, Piss & Vinegar: The First Ladies of Wrestling,” out of the Tribeca Film Festival.

Film will be Koch Lorber’s second limited-release theatrical after “The Five Obstructions,” which unspools at Gotham’s Film Forum on Wednesday.

Produced, directed and edited by Ruth Leitman, “Lipstick & Dynamite” tells the story of a little-known group of early women pro-wrestlers — many of whom are now well into their 80s.

Film had its world premiere at Toronto’s Hot Docs Festival and was an audience favorite at Tribeca earlier this month.

Theatrical release of “Lipstick & Dynamite” is slated for fall 2004 or early 2005, company said.

Leitman described her subjects, some of whom wrestled alligators, bears and men as well as other women, as “some of the greatest un-self-proclaimed feminists of the World War II generation.”

Coming out of Cannes, Koch Lorber prexy Richard Lorber said company has three or four more theatrical acquisitions in the pipeline along with at least seven more DVD releases. Company also is due to announce several other reissues of classic cinema titles on DVD.
