Thorpe leaves Sony for Canon

Title, role to be determined

Larry Thorpe, a longtime Sony exec who headed up the electronics giant’s move into high-definition camera technology, is joining Canon’s broadcast lens division.

A Canon spokeswoman confirmed that Thorpe is joining the company in February but said his title and role are yet to be determined.

Given Thorpe’s role developing and promoting high-definition technology, however, he’s considered likely to help Canon develop lenses for use in high-def recording. HD camera chips typically record in lower resolution than film, requiring higher quality lenses to make up the difference.

A veteran of over 20 years at Sony, where he worked on a number of camera technologies, Thorpe took an early retirement offer late last year.
