‘Middle’s’ Landrum pilots her own life to ABC, Sony

Alphabet project, 'Apartment' feature Asian American leads

Scribe Pang-ni Landrum (“Malcolm in the Middle”) has gone into the pilot business, penning a laffer for ABC and developing another at Sony Pictures TV.

Both feature Asian American leads and are inspired by Landrum’s own life.

The Alphabet project is based on Landrum’s relationship with her mother, Shu-Chen Li, a Taiwanese immigrant who wasn’t afraid to speak her mind: She asked her daughter’s boyfriends if they were virgins, for example.

Set in San Antonio (where Landrum grew up), show revolves around the tight bond between an unlucky-in-love Asian American ad exec and her wilder, single mother, a 40ish firecracker who co-owns a local restaurant.

Prolific TV helmer Barnet Kellman (“Alias,” “Murphy Brown”), who also exec produced ABC Family’s “My Life as a Sitcom,” is also on board as an exec producer. Laffer comes from Gavin Polone’s Pariah TV and Touchstone.

Then there’s the Sony project, “Apartment 2H,” which was set up through the studio’s program to develop more scripts with young and up-and-coming writers. Landrum’s script centers on a twentysomething Los Angeles woman whose life — and those of her pals — is complicated when her eccentric Chinese stepfather moves to town.

That character, Mr. Liu, is modeled after Landrum’s stepfather, whom she knows as “Mr. Li.” Like the character in her script, Mr. Li will sometimes arrive on Landrum’s doorstep straight from Beijing, unannounced.

Landrum has also written for “Friends” and short-lived CBS laffer “The Brian Benben Show.” She’s repped by William Morris, Kellman by Endeavor.
