25-year vet returns after consulting stint
HOLLYWOOD — HBO has tapped Steve Davidson, a longtime sales exec at the pay cabler, as executive vice president of affiliate sales.
After 23 years at HBO, Davidson left the company in 2002 to co-found consulting firm Sports Media Group. He rejoins the network Feb. 2 and will report to cabler’s president of sales and marketing Eric Kessler.
“Steve was always a greatly respected part of the HBO team, and I’m excited he has agreed to return to the company,” Kessler said. “Because of his extensive experience in affiliate sales and long-term relationships with our distributors, Steve can hit the ground running with HBO enjoying a seamless transition.”
Gotham-based Davidson will manage HBO and Cinemax’s account-based sales activities in conjunction with the networks’ affiliate cable systems and satellite providers. He will also manage special market distribution nationwide.
“While I may have stepped away from my day-to-day responsibilities at HBO for a while, I continued to work closely with the company on a number of issues,” Davidson said. “It’s great to be coming back to the place I consider home, especially at a time of wonderful innovation at HBO and in the cable and satellite industries.”
Davidson joined the network in 1979 as a regional manager in the mid-east and was made regional director three years later. He has since served as VP of affiliate operations, general manager of HBO’s New York and Philadelphia offices and senior VP-general manager of affiliate operations.
During his two-year absence, he remained involved with HBO as a consultant.
Davidson is a founder and former president of the Philadelphia Cable Club and served on the board of directors of the Atlantic Cable Show.
