Police: Pirate lair raided

Lab could generate $7.3 mil worth of DVDs

In what the MPAA is calling one of the largest single U.S. seizures of illegal CD/DVD manufacturing equipment, authorities raided an illegal disc manufacturing facility in Queens that the trade group claims is capable of making 730,000 pirate DVDs a year.

Police raided the factory, operating out of a basement apartment in the Gotham borough, seizing some 60 DVD burners, 7,400 illegally recorded DVD-Rs, 70 CD burners and 8,900 illegally recorded CDs.

MPAA said the distribution location seizures included 4,800 DVD-Rs and 5,300 CDs.

With the capacity to replicate 2,000 DVD-Rs per day, Body said the lab could have generated DVDs representing potential profits of up to $7.3 million.

Malikie Sow, 33, of Jamaica, Queens, was arrested and charged with trademark counterfeiting in the first degree, failure to disclose the origin of a recording device in the second degree, and operating a facility without a required license in violation of the city’s administrative code. If convicted, Sow could face up to 15 years in prison.

The MPAA maintains its studio members lose more than $3.5 billion in potential revenue to pirates annually, not including losses associated with films downloaded over the Internet.

Working with law enforcement around the world, the MPAA last year said it seized more than 52 million illegal optical discs in 2003.
