Letter to the editor

It is unfortunate that in a pathetic attempt to inflate his own notoriety, interior designer Michael Beckson has impugned not only Gary Winnick, but also the beauty and integrity of the original Paul Williams-designed MCA headquarters at 360 N. Crescent Drive, which was purchased by the Gores brothers in 2002.

While the office may not have suited Sam Gores’ or Beckson’s taste, renowned architects, designers, architectural historians and even Paul Williams’ family who visited the offices all shared a far different opinion. They called Mr. Winnick’s restoration “classic,” “refined,” “elegant” and “exquisite.” Having worked every day in these magnificent and inviting offices, I never encountered a “panic room” or a “vast” marble bathroom.

How sad that his architectural gem may be irreparably damaged by its new decorator. Great architecture is timeless and, since 1936, the Crescent property has been home to three important Los Angeles companies that made significant contributions to the nation and to the world.

We hope Paradigm continues this record, but its owners might consider “exorcising the ghost” of Michael Beckson.
