A comicbook about a soccer player and team the Supa Strikas, from the Soweto black township outside Johannesburg, is to be adapted into a 40-episode animated TV series for a Canadian and South African co-production.

Created by South African Andrew Smith, the 24-page comic is inserted into the country’s biggest circulation newspaper, the Sunday Times, once a month and into newspapers in other African countries, giving it an estimated readership of 10 million per month.

The co-production deal with Firdaus Kharas, Canadian animation producer and owner of Chocolate Moose Prods., was negotiated at the Sithengi Film and Television Market last month. Work will begin in early 2004.
